Learn how to install no-flat inner tubes on your bike.

Experienced cyclists often carry an extra inner tube and a small air pump to avoid being stranded by a flat, but other options are available. No-flat inner tubes can be used to replace traditional inner tubes. Many different models of these types of inner tubes are available, some that include a self sealing slime, but most are made of foam, and can be installed just like an ordinary inner tube.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the wheel from your bicycle. You may need a small wrench or socket to remove the wheel depending on your particular bike model. Refer to your owner's manual to properly remove the wheel.

    • 2

Release the air from the inner tube by depressing the detent pin located at the center of the valve stem. Press the pin and hold it down while squeezing the tire until all air is pushed out.

    • 3

Insert the tip of the tire lever, or a flat head screwdriver between the tire body and the rim, then trace the diameter of the rim until one side of the tire is off of the rim.

    • 4

Pull the tire's other side down and away from the rim until the tire is removed, then take off the old inner tube. Push the valve stem through the rim hole, then the inner tube will simply pull off.

    • 5

Clean away any dirt or debris from the rim bed using a wet rag, then dry the rim bed thoroughly.

    • 6

Place one side of the tire back onto the rim by setting the tire against the rim, then insert the tire lever or screwdriver between the tire and rim, and trace the diameter.

    • 7

Fit the no-flat inner tube in between the tire and rim. Start at one point, ideally the top, and work clockwise. You'll have to push it into position using a bit of force, and it will get harder as you complete the circle. If using a slime filled or air filled tube, put the tube on before the tire, and insert the valve stem into the hole.

    • 8

Secure the other side of the tire body to the rim by using the tire lever or flathead screwdriver, and tracing the diameter as before.

Tips & Warnings

  • Ensure that you read the installation instructions for your specific brand of no-flat inner tube, as all brands may differ slightly in installation procedure.
