How to Get a License to Sell Insurance in Texas

How to Get a License to Sell Insurance in Texas thumbnail
The Texas Department of Insurance issues licenses for people wanting to sell insurance in the state.

Before you can become an insurance agent and sell insurance policies in Texas, you must first become licensed by the Texas Department of Insurance (TDI). You must be at least 18 years old to start the licensing process, and will have to pass a background check and a licensing examination. After you obtain an insurance license, you must renew it every two years. The TDI has a contract with a private company, Prometric, for the administration of the licensing process.

Instructions

    • 1

Download and print a copy of the TDI Licensing Information Bulletin from the Prometric website (see Resources). The bulletin has details regarding the types of licenses offered by the TDI and contains all the forms and applications you will need for the licensing process.

    • 2

Determine the type of agent's license you want to apply for. The TDI has seven different types of insurance agent licenses you can apply for, each of which has its own examination.

    • 3

Register for and schedule the appropriate licensing examination with Prometric. You can register online on the Prometric website or by calling 866-267-0455. You will need a credit or debit card to pay a registration fee ranging from $55 to $70.

    • 4

Pass the licensing examination. The examination will be given at one of Prometric's testing centers and it will consist solely of multiple-choice questions. You must score at least 70% to pass and you will receive your results immediately upon completion of the examination.

    • 5

Have your fingerprints taken for a background check. All applicants must have their fingerprints taken and submitted to the Texas Department of Public Safety and the FBI for a criminal records check. There will be a fingerprint technician at the Prometric testing center. You will be charged $34.25 for a fingerprint processing fee and $9.95 for a service fee.

    • 6

Complete and submit the Individual Insurance License Application to Prometric/Oak Hill Technology. The application is found at the back of the Licensing Information Bulletin. You will need to mail the application, a copy of your fingerprinting receipt, and a check or money order for $50 to:

      Prometric/Oak Hill Technology
