How to Search an IP Address by Email

How to Search an IP Address by Email thumbnail
When you find an IP address, it enables you to figure out where an email came from.

An IP address is a unique address that identifies where an email came from. It does not show the user's name or address, but gives information about the Internet service provider that the sender used when sending the email to you. Searching an IP by email means looking at a specific email to search for the IP. Once you have the IP address from the email, you can discover where that address came from.

Instructions

    • 1

      Open the email in question.

    • 2

Click on the "Display More" or "More" link, which should be near the "From" and "To" information. If you already see a long list of codes and numbers, you are already looking at all of the information. If you cannot find a "Display More" option, try hitting "reply" to see if all of the information shows up in the reply.

    • 3

Scroll through the lists of information. When you see "IP Address of Sender" pay attention to that number. If you see IP addresses listed more than once, discard the earlier IP addresses in favor of the last one listed. The last listed IP address is the hardest for any scam artist to change, so that is the one you should choose.

    • 4

Plug the IP address you found into an IP address locater. There are many, but some are listed in the Resources section. You will get information about the Internet service provider, which is the company that provided the IP address for the sender. From there, you can figure out how to find more information out about the sender.
