How to Check the Speed of CenturyTel DSL

DSL modems use phone lines to transmit information.

The maximum speed of your DSL (digital subscriber line) connection is limited by the subscription package you purchased from your Internet service provider, but most DSL connections don't reach the speeds they're advertised at. Check how well your DSL Internet is performing to see if you're getting all the speed you're paying for.

• CenturyTel DSL subscription
• DSL modem

Instructions

1. Cancel any downloads in progress and close programs that use an Internet connection, like file-sharing software or software updaters.

2. Open an Internet browser window and go to one of the websites linked in the Resources section.

3. Pick the location closest to you, if the speed test tool gives you an option. Most speed testers choose the location automatically.

4. Click "Begin Test" or "Click here to begin test." The website measures how long your CenturyTel DSL connection takes to upload and download certain files and rates the upload and download speed based on the time taken.

Tips & Warnings

• Test your connection speed at more than one speed test site to get a better idea of your DSL connection's performance.
