Transfer Super 8mm film to DVD or CD with a few basic steps.

Cheap, reliable and easy to use, Super 8 film was long the standard of home filmmaking. As time passed, and video grew as a format, Super 8 tapered off in popularity, becoming a nearly unused format. With its prior popularity, however, there are many Super 8 films in existence that need to be transferred to video to be saved and viewed by modern people. With these basic steps, you can transfer your Super 8 films to video formats on DVD or CD.

Instructions

    • 1

Set up and load a Super 8 film projector.

    • 2

Set up a projection screen in front of the projector.

    • 3

Turn on the projector and align the image with the projection screen.

    • 4

Set up the tripod beside the projector and mount the video camera upon it.

    • 5

Look through the viewfinder and align the projected image with the boarders of the video camera's viewfinder.

    • 6

Start the recording process on the video camera, then run the film projector. Let the film play completely through without touching the camera or projector. When the recording is done, turn off the projector and rewind and view the video tape to confirm the recording.

    • 7

Turn on your video camera and computer and connect them with a FireWire cable.

    • 8

Open you video editing software. Though there are many video editing programs available in varied grade of cost and quality (see Resources), lower-level software is all that this process requires.

    • 9

Click "File" and open the import window. Choose your camera from the list of import devices and transfer the video from the camera to your hard drive.

    • 10

Drag the downloaded video clip to the timeline section. The timeline represents the order at which clips will play out, so, if you have multiple clips, organize them in the order you wish them to be seen.

    • 11

Place your CD or DVD into your computer's burning drive.

    • 12

Click the "Export" button and fill out your recording specifications. DVD will allow for the highest quality transfer and most playback options, but you can choose lower-quality recording options that are compatible with CDs. When you are done, proceed with the burning process.
