Firefighters depend on equipment to keep them safe and protected when fighting structure fires, responding to automobile accidents and any other type of assistance they provide. Turnouts, which is the clothing worn by firefighters, must be cleaned properly to maintain the quality of the material. Instructions

    • 1

      Remove all padding, boots, belts and suspenders from turnouts. This will help to reduce the weight of the gear and make it easier to clean.

    • 2

      Scrub any noticeable stains on the jacket and the pants. This step will help to keep stains off the turnouts.

      Place turnout gear in a heavy-duty washing machine.

    • 4

      Put the manufacturer's recommended amount of laundry detergent in the washing machine and wait for the cycle to complete.

      Take the turnouts out of the washer.

    • 6

      Place the jacket on one hanger and the pants on another hanger.

    • 7

      Hang the turnouts in the closet dryer at least 12 hours or until fully dry.
