How To Start a Nursing Agency Business thumbnail
Starting a nursing agency business is one way to earn a living in the health care field.

Nurses are medical professionals. Nurses may perform many different health care tasks including inserting intravenous lines, drawing blood and monitoring a patient's condition after a surgical procedure. Nurses can choose to work in many areas including hospital care, private practice and nursing homes. One such area of potential employment is working for an agency. Agencies employ nurses on a temporary basis to meet shortages. Starting a nursing agency can be an ideal way to combine your interest in business with your background in health care.

Instructions

    • 1

Create an office space. You will need a place to store documents and meet with clients. The office space should also have a computer and a telephone. You can use a room in your house that has a separate entrance. Once your business grows you may want to rent a larger space to meet with clients and handle business.

    • 2

Contact potential employers. Investigate all health care employers in your area. Include hospitals, nursing homes and research facilities as well as free-standing clinics. Ask to speak to the human resources department. Prepare a presentation about your background in health care and your ability to fill vacant positions. Bring forms with you that will allow you to legally sign contracts with the employers to fill staffing positions for a specific rate of pay.

    • 3

Find clients. Seek out nurses who can meet the needs of the employers in question. Advertise in local and national nursing magazines. Emphasize the benefits of working a temporary job such as more flexible hours and a higher rate of pay. Contact local nursing schools and ask if you can set up a booth at a career day. Prepare a handout for potential employees to read. The handout should have your contact information as well as all employment requirements.

    • 4

Vet candidates. Once you've met with potential employees make sure they have the qualifications necessary for temporary employment. Make copies of their licenses. Verify that they have graduated from college and meet all the requirements. Contact previous employers to make sure they have the skills necessary to work in a busy operation room or with renal patients.

    • 5

Keep detailed records of all your business affairs. Have a file with background information on every single person working for you. Have copies of contracts with employers as well. If possible scan all documents into a computer to make sure they remain easily accessible.

    • 6

Make sure that you are adhering to all necessary regulations governing state licensing and medical staffing employment. A staffing agency is expected to fully vet all candidates for employment. The owner of any staffing agency may be held accountable by the state for any problems that may later arise with an employee's performance or conduct. Consult with a lawyer to make sure that all your documentation is in accordance with local, state and federal laws.
