When you have your own security company, it's essential to make sure that all employees are licensed and qualified for their jobs. The laws regulating this industry differ from one state to another. In Illinois, for example, security guards, detectives, alarm contractors and other professionals are required to obtain a PERC card. Once their application is approved, they receive a PERC card number that serves as a unique identifier.

Tip

TIP: You can obtain a PERC number through the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation’s website. If you already have a number but forgot it, call them at 800-560-6420.

If you're looking to hire for these roles, conduct a PERC card lookup before you make a final decision. You can use the License Lookup tool available on the IDFPR website. Simply enter the potential employee’s PERC card number in the designated field and click Search.

Get Your PERC Card

The state of Illinois requires security officers, private investigators and locksmiths to obtain a PERC card. This acronym stands for permanent employee registration card. Without it, you cannot be hired for one of these jobs. Although it doesn't guarantee you work, it shows that you have no criminal record.

Obtaining a PERC card in Illinois is simple. Go to the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation’s website, fill out an online form and submit it to the Division of Professional Regulation along with a receipt of fingerprint processing. Fingerprints must be taken within 60 days from the application date.

You must also pay a $55 nonrefundable fee with a credit or debit card. ACH payments, a type of electronic funds transfer, and eChecks are accepted too. Additionally, you must provide a photograph of yourself along with your Social Security number.

Once your application is processed, you will receive a PERC card number consisting of six digits. This number must be renewed every three years. You will receive a PERC card renewal notice about 90 days before the card’s expiration date.

Check Your PERC Card Status

In case you haven't heard back about your application, check your PERC card status by calling 800-560-6420. This phone number belongs to the Illinois Division of Professional Regulation and provides support from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. Most applicants receive their PERC card number within six to eight weeks.

Find Your PERC Card Number

If you need to know your own PERC card number you can call the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation at 800-560-6420. You might also check the documents that came with your card. They include a copy of your application, helpful information and your PERC number.
