A banner is an important part of a Web page design.

When you are designing a Web page layout, it's important to keep in mind the importance of having a good banner at the top. Your Web page banner is the first thing that visitors to your site will notice. If it is unprofessional or just uninteresting, viewers may quickly lose interest. Many people who are creating a Web page, especially if it is for their business, will hire someone else to create graphics such as the banner for them. But if you have access to Adobe Photoshop, you can create a quality banner yourself.

Instructions

    • 1

Load the image you would like to use as the background for your banner onto your computer by copying it from a digital medium or by scanning it in.

    • 2

Open Photoshop. Select "File" from the menu and choose "New." In the dialog box that appears, enter the width and height that you want for your banner. There are various standard sizes to choose from, such as 728x90 pixels or 468x60 pixels, or you can choose to create something in between. But don't make it so large that it crowds out the rest of the content on the page. Click "OK."

    • 3

Select the "Paint Bucket" tool from the tool palette and use it to fill the canvas with the same color that you use for the background on your Web page.

    • 4

Select "File" from the menu and choose "Open." In the dialog box that appears, locate the file that you loaded in Step One and open it.

    • 5

Right-click on the layer in the "Layers" palette and choose "Duplicate Layer." In the dialog box that appears, make the "Destination" the other document and click "OK."

    • 6

Go back to the other document. Use the "Scale" function under "Transform" to scale the image to fit the banner. You may have to use the "Crop" tool to get it right.

    • 7

Use the "Move" tool to position the image where you want it.

    • 8

Select the "Text" tool from the tool palette. Go to the tool options that appear at the top and choose the font style, size and color that you want for the banner. It is probably best to use a color that is already a part of the color scheme at your site. Save your work as a JPEG for use.
