How to Tune a Definitive Technology Supercube II

How to Tune a Definitive Technology Supercube II thumbnail
Tuning a Defintitive Technology SuperCube II subwoofer is possible using standardized placement techniques.

The Definitive Technology SuperCube II is a compact yet powerful subwoofer, deploying a single 8-inch driver and two passive 8-inch radiators. Although the unit occupies less than one cubic foot of floor space, the speaker has similar overall displacement to a 12-inch subwoofer. Since perceived bass response is a function of the listener's location in relation to the subwoofer, relative location is all-important. Additionally, the physics of low-frequency propagation do not change, so using some tried-and-true techniques should yield good results.

Instructions

    • 1

Plug the SCII into an extension cord, and the cord into an outlet. Plug the subwoofer's line-in jack into the receiver's subwoofer out jack using an RCA cable. Both the extension and RCA cords must be long enough to reach the listening position.

    • 2

Access the receiver's subwoofer test tone via the unit's remote control. Consult the owner's manual if this procedure is unfamiliar.

    • 3

Fine-tune the subwoofer's location such that it is in the main listening position. Turn up the subwoofer on the rear of the unit to the 12 o'clock position. Turn the phase control to "0." Engage the receiver's test tone.

    • 4

Walk around the listening space, until the bass is perceived to be of the highest quality. Move the subwoofer from the listening location to this point in the room. Make small adjustments to the final location to respect traffic patterns and other usability factors.

Tips & Warnings

  • Bass is largely non-directional, so placing the subwoofer in nearly any part of the room is acceptable.
