How to Play Video Links in Internet Explorer 6

Streaming videos on the Internet are mostly in Flash Video format (FLV), but videos also come in other formats, such as MPEG-4, QuickTime, or Windows Media. When you play a streaming video link on the Internet Explorer 6, the browser prompts you if some additional steps are required to play the video link. Generally, you see a highlighted yellow bar on top of the page telling the reason why the video link can not play. If the browser is missing a plug-in--for instance QuickTime or Windows Media--it will let you know where to download it. Since most streaming videos are in FLV format, you must have Flash player installed on the computer.

Instructions

  1. Install Flash

    • 1

Install Flash player on the computer. You can download it from Adobe's website (see Resources for link).

    • 2

Click the "Agree and install now" button.

    • 3

Follow the onscreen instructions to complete the installation of Flash player.

    Watch Video

    • 4

      Open Internet Explorer 6.

    • 5

Enter the video link in the browser's address bar. The address bar is where you usually see the URLs of websites. The link you enter here should be like http://www.example.com.

    • 6

Hit "Enter" or click "Go." The browser will now load the page that contains your video. The entire video might take some time to load, depending on your Internet connection speed and the size of the streaming video.

Tips & Warnings

  • At times, videos on the Internet are non-flash. This means that instead of FLV extension, it could be WMV, MOV, MPG or any other. In case the particular associated plug-in is not installed on your computer, Internet Explorer 6 will prompt you to download the plug-in or the player. The browser will tell you which plug-in you need, along with a link to download the program. Once you download and install it (just like Flash player), the video will run just fine.
