How to Use a Camera With Yahoo Instant Messenger

Yahoo! Messenger is one of the leading instant (IM) messengers. It comes with a host of features including group chat, video calling, free PC-to-PC calling, PC-to-landline calling and many others. Video calling is a feature that allows you to conduct an actual video chat with your friends and family members on Yahoo! Messenger. Considering that most laptops today come equipped with webcams, there can be no better use for webcam then for a video call. The setup process is relatively simple, but it may require some experimentation with the Messenger's features in order to properly be completed.

      Download the most up-to-date drivers for your webcam. There are two ways to do this. The automatic procedure is to go to the Device Manager which is located in Control Panel. Under "Imaging Device" look for your webcam, right click it and select "Update Driver Software..." and select "Search Automatically for Updated Driver Software" when asked. The other option is go to the webcam manufacturer's website and manually download and install the latest driver. This update will require you to restart your computer.

      Download and install Yahoo! Messenger if you don't already have it. Also, make sure that you register with Yahoo! and set up a user name and password in order to use their messenger service. Once the program has been installed, enter your log-in information to sign In.

      Click on the "Help" button on the menu bar of Yahoo! Messenger, go down and select "Set up Video and Voice." The setup utility will load. Test your microphone by reading the statement on the first screen, if the colored dots light up, then that means your microphone is working properly.

      Click "Next." Turn up your speaker volume so that you're able to hear the music playing during the speaker test. If you're able to hear the sound, proceed to the next step.

      Select your webcam from the pull-down menu labeled "Choose the Camera You Want to Use:" If you're able to view your video, then that indicates a properly functioning webcam. Complete the setup wizard by clicking the "Finish" button.

      Right click on name of any of your Yahoo! Messenger "Friends" and select "Start Video Call..." to initiate video chatting. You camera will start and you should also be able to view your friend's video if they have properly set their computer.
