One of the best ways to improve search results is to use your preferred language.

Bing search engine was released in May 2009 and was rolled out world-wide in June 2009, replacing Windows Live Search. The aim was to improve a user's search results with three main features: the ability to limit results in a simple interface, tools to help customers make better decisions while online shopping and a hover option that allows the user to preview a search result to assess its relevance. One of the key ways to improve results is through language settings.

Instructions

    • 1

Navigate to www.bing.com using your preferred web browser. Click the "Preferences" link in the top right-hand corner once the page has loaded. There are three types of settings that can be changed that affect language and location settings.

    • 2

Enter your region, city or postal code in the "Location" option in the "General Settings" section to identify what location you'd like your results tailored toward. Changing this setting ensures that maps, weather and any other website that displays location-specific results will show relevant results.

    • 3

Select the desired Bing search page language from the "Display" drop box in the "General Settings" section. The Bing search site is available in 40 languages. Bing uses this information to rank search results.

    • 4

Choose the languages to include in search results in the "Search Language," "Web Settings" section. For example, to see only pages written in Spanish, select Spanish from the "Limit my searches to pages written in the following languages" menu item.

    • 5

Scroll to either the top or the bottom of the page and click "Save" on the right-hand side of the page. The language settings options have now been updated and will be used each time the Bing site is loaded.

Tips & Warnings

  • Change your location information when executing a search for nearby items. For example, if searching for a dry cleaner while on a business trip, location settings will help improve the relevancy of results.

  • Changing all three settings may produce too few search results for less popular subjects. If this happens, simply select the "Restore defaults" option in the "Preferences" page at the bottom right of the page.

  • Unless you are signing in to Windows Live, these settings are machine specific, meaning that you will need to change them on each machine or mobile device you use.
