How to Become a K-9 Unit Officer
While becoming a K9 officer is a dream of many police officers, obtaining this elusive goal takes years of dedication, enthusiasm and hard work. The requirements to become a canine officer are far-ranging and can vary by agency. Generally, though, each list of requirements contains a set of standard prerequisites.

Most agencies require a college degree. Obtain a college degree in criminal justice or other social science from an accredited university or college. This will not only give you the educational background you need to succeed, but also a leg up over the competition.

Attend the police academy. This is where you undergo official police training. Before you can become a canine officer, you must first obtain the same education every police officer receives.

Show your skills. Competition to become a canine officer is keen. Thus, be the best police officer you can. Gain as many certifications and continuing education courses as possible. Maintain a stellar reputation for hard work, going above and beyond your duties and maintain a good attitude.

You will learn to handle your high-drive dog. Apply to be a canine officer. Once accepted, you will attend dog training and handling school. This process pairs you with your optimal K-9 partner and teaches you to handle and live with your new partner.
