Instructions

Apply via the county in which you want to marry. The county will usually ask both of you to appear in person to pick up the license. Fill out the application completely to expedite the process.

    • 2

Type your choice for married last name. The system will ask each of you to choose a name. Traditionally, the woman takes on her husband's last name; technically the husband and wife can choose to change either of their names or none at all.

    • 3

Pay the marriage license fee. Payment modes will appear on the county website. Click the payment icon to pay with your credit card. You may also mail a money order or check, if you are not in a hurry.

    • 4

Get blood tests. Six states, and the District of Columbia, require a blood test before issuing a marriage license. The six states are: Georgia, Indiana, Massachusetts, Mississippi, Montana and Oklahoma. If you applied online, you must take these test results with you when picking up your license.

Pick up your license. You will need to bring your state-issued driver's licenses or other identification. Both you and your fiance must be present.

Tips & Warnings

  • Follow the online directions from the county recorder's office exactly. Missing an instruction will delay the process.

  • Not all counties or states will allow you to apply for a new marriage license online. Many will ask you to appear in person. You can usually print the application online to save time.
