How to Install Replacement Windows in Stucco thumbnail
You can install replacement windows in a stucco home.

Replacement windows can be installed in any stucco home, provided the existing window jambs are in good condition. The stucco on the exterior of the house shouldn't be damaged in the installation process because replacement windows are designed to fit within the wooden jamb that's already framed and finished in the home's wall. To install replacement windows in stucco, carefully measure your existing windows and ask for assistance when ordering the correct size from a home improvement center. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the replacement window and the window jamb to make sure the new window will fit in the jamb. Do this before you remove the old window sashes.

    • 2

Cut the old sash cords with a sharp knife to remove the window sashes, then carefully pry away the window stops with a small pry bar and putty blade.

    • 3

Lay a continuous bead of caulk along the interior edge of the window jamb's blind stop.

    • 4

Lift the replacement window into the jamb opening and press it against the blind stop. Set a screw loosely into the upper right and lower left corners to hold the window in place.

    • 5

Square the window with a tape measure. Measure each diagonal and place wooden shims in each corner until both diagonals are exactly equal length. Attach the remaining screws loosely to keep the window square.

    • 6

Ensure the window is level by placing a four-foot level on the right and left sides of the window. Slide shims between the window and sill if needed.

    • 7

Tighten the screws and cut the shims level with the window. Stuff strips of fiberglass insulation between the window casing and the sill to prevent drafts.

    • 8

Cover the sill with a sill filler strip and apply caulk around the interior of the window casing. Smooth the caulk with your fingertip or a putty blade.

    • 9

Go outside and apply an additional bead of caulk to the exterior window casing. Smooth this down as well to form a waterproof seal around your new replacement window.
