How to Compress Song Files

How to Compress Song Files thumbnail
Newer computers usually come with file compression software.

Compressing a song file---also called zipping or archiving---makes the song files smaller, thus making them more convenient to store and transfer. Some type of compressing software is required to both compress a file and open a compressed file, but most newer computers come from the factory with compressing software already installed. If needed, compressing software can be bought and downloaded from various web sources.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the folder containing the song files you want to compress. Your music is generally sent to a folder entitled "Music" or "My Music" after you download it or rip it from a CD.

    • 2

Right-click on the artist folder (the name of the band), the album folder (the name of the album) or the single song you want to compress.

    • 3

Left-click the "Send To" tab on the pop-up window that appears. This causes another pop-up window to appear.

    • 4

Left-click "Send to Compressed Folder." After the songs compress, generally a rather short period of time (5 to 10 seconds for most full-length albums), the zipped folder will appear in the same folder containing the rest of your music.

Tips & Warnings

  • Depending on how your computer is set up, the compressed folder may appear on your desktop instead of in your "Music" folder. If you can't find the compressed file, do a quick search for the name of the song, album or artist zipped. The compressed folder will look like a normal folder except that it will have a zipper on it.
