Obtaining a handgun requires following state law, choosing an appropriate-sized gun and choosing the proper caliber. Firearms purchasers must submit to a background check and possibly a waiting period. Buyers may also be required to take a firearms training course.

Instructions

Read your state laws concerning handguns. Gun owners have the responsibility of verifying firearm laws by contacting their state's Department of Public Safety. Though various websites offer data regarding hand gun legality, it is the responsibility of each gun owner to keep up to date on any changes made.

Visit a firearms store in your local area. Determine what type of gun you want in size, style and mechanism. There are several questions to consider. What is your intended use for the gun? What type of gun are you comfortable using? How much money are you willing to spend?

Talk to a sales associate about the gun of your choice. Ask for a handgun that is of proper length and weight for your hand. Ideally, you want the gun to be moderately heavy but still easy to grip and hold. Hold the handgun firmly to get the "feel" of it.

    • 4

Select a caliber of bullet. The heavier the bullet weight in "grains", the harder the bullet hits the intended object. Bullet diameter determines the size of the bullet hole. The velocity of the bullet determines how quickly the projectile piece ejects. One caliber is the equivalent of 1/100 of an inch. Therefore, a .357 magnum caliber would be .357 inches or 0.9 centimeters. Heavier handguns reduce the "recoil" you feel after shooting. Follow the recommended caliber as suggested by the sales associate or on the gun marking.

Submit to a background check. During this time, the authorized gun dealer will perform a background check on you, based on your photo ID and your submitted form. Using the FBI's National Instant Criminal Background Check System, the gun dealer will search your records for criminal convictions or any other questionable records. (For example, public or private records like restraining orders or late alimony payments could count against you) The check may be performed electronically or by phone. Some firearm stores will wait one to three days before running the check. If you pass this background check you may not have to go through a five-day waiting period. Check your state laws to determine if any additional waiting periods apply.

Take a Concealed Handgun License class for shooting experience and to obtain a concealed handgun permit (if available in your state). These classes usually have a minimum requirement of practice hours. You may also be required to score a minimum percentage on a written test and to demonstrate a certain level of proficiency on a shooting range.

Tips & Warnings

  • Study the differences between pistols, which are loaded with cartridges, and revolvers, which are loaded with individual bullets.

  • Single-action handguns require manual cocking. Double-action handguns automatically cock the hammer setting you up for rapid re-fire.

  • Keep your handgun under lock and key, away from children.

  • Keep your handgun unloaded and/or switch on the safety-device until you need it.

  • Only buy guns legally.
