Keep your computer and personal information safe with free anti-malware programs.

The term "malware" stands for malicious software. This type of computer virus infects your computer and allows its creator to "spy" on you and collect private and financial information. Many times, this type of virus appears on your computer as a fake alert, requesting you to purchase and download a software fix. Unfortunately, this so-called fix is made by the virus's' creator. Instead of spending hundreds of dollars on expensive downloads, taking your computer in for repairs. or purchasing a new computer, you can use free anti-malware software to eliminate and prevent malware threats.

Instructions

    • 1

Open your Internet browser and type malwarebytes.org into the search bar. If you only have Internet Explorer on your computer, you may have trouble accessing the Internet. This occurs because malware viruses typically infect the Internet Explorer program. If possible, use Mozilla Firefox or another browser to access the Internet and visit marlwarebytes.org.

    • 2

Wait until the page loads. Click on the blue button in the middle left-hand side of the screen that reads "download" and which, in smaller print, reads "free version."

    • 3

Allow the next page to load. When you click on the blue button, your browser redirects you to another website. On this website, locate the download button, in the center of the screen.

    • 4

Wait while your browser redirects you again. The download should start automatically by bringing up a small window asking you to save the file to your computer.

    • 5

Ensure the pop-up box reads that you have chosen to open "mbam-setup-1.46.exe". If you download a file spelled slightly different, you may be downloading a virus instead of the elimination program. Once you verify the spelling, click on the "Save File" button.

    • 6

Allow the program to download. Download time depends on your Internet connection speed; you may have to wait several minutes for the program to download.

    • 7

Double click on the finished download in the "Downloads" browser box. -- this will be a smaller window that appears on your computer screen. When you double click, another small window appears asking if you wish to run the file. Click on the "Run" button at this time.

    • 8

Continue to the next pop-up window. Depending on the version of Windows on your computer, you may not see another small pop-up window, but with newer versions you will be asked again to give your permission for the program to continue to upload and be installed on your computer.

    • 9

Choose your language on the next small pop-up window. Once you choose your language from the drop-down list, click on the button that reads "OK".

    • 10

Click "Next" at the bottom of the following small pop-up window. On this window, accept the license agreement and click "Next" again on the following five pages.

    • 11

Click the button labeled "Install" at the bottom of the window, once you finally have reached the option. Again, depending on your Internet connection and the speed of your computer, you may have to wait several minutes for the program to install to your computer. Once finished installing, click the button labeled "Finish" at the bottom of the window.

    • 12

Wait as another window appears and begins updating the Malwarebytes program on your computer. The update may take several minutes to complete.

Tips & Warnings

  • After downloading and updating, run the program to scan your computer for malware viruses. The scan may take as one hour or longer to complete, depending on the number of documents and programs on your computer. After scanning, you may quarantine and delete all infected files on your computer.

  • Even with an existing malware threat, you should be able to open Mozilla Firefox or another Internet browser and access malwarebytes.org to download the anti-malware program.
