A Westell DSL modem can be installed and connect you to the Internet in minutes.

Many Internet service providers supply their customers with a free or discounted Westell 6100 DSL modem. Your DSL (digital subscriber line) modem must be properly installed and configured with your computer in order to successfully connect to the Internet. The method of installing a DSL modem is similar regardless of the brand of the DSL modem. Contact your Internet service provider to ensure your lines are provisioned and complete. A provisioned line means your Internet service provider remotely tested the phone lines to ensure the lines can handle the DSL connection.

Instructions

    • 1

      Shut down your computer.

    • 2

Plug your DSL filters into any available telephone outlets in your home. Your DSL filters separate the signal used to make telephone calls from the signal used to access the Internet. Connect any existing telephones into the other end of the DSL filter. You now have a DSL filter connected to the telephone outlet and your telephone cord connected in the other end of the filter.

Plug one end of your Ethernet cable into the Ethernet port of your Westell modem labeled "Internet". An Ethernet cord resembles a telephone cord, only larger. Plug the other end of the Ethernet cable into your computer's available Ethernet port. Your Westell DSL modem is now connected to the computer via Ethernet.

Plug one end of a telephone cord into the back of your DSL modem labeled "telephone" and plug the other end of your telephone cord into your nearest telephone outlet.

    • 5

Plug your DSL modem into your nearest wall outlet. Restart your computer.

    • 6

Install any software that came with your DSL modem that was provided by your Internet service provider.

    • 7

Click on "Start", navigate to the Control Panel and click on "Network and Internet." Click "Network and Sharing Center" and select "Connect to the Internet." Click on "Connect to a network" if the option for connecting to the Internet is not available.

Type in any username and password that is requested by your computer. You created your own username and password when initially establishing service with your Internet service provider. Click "Connect". Open your browser (Internet Explorer or Firefox) and access a website.
