How Do I Wear a Muumuu Wrap Dress?

The traditional Hawaiian muumuu hangs from the shoulder and comes in floral patterns that are evocative of the islands. However, recently, muumuus have come into fashion but in the less traditional sense. High-end designers have taken the concept of the long, flowing dress and translated it into chic styles, including wrap dresses, which are less shapeless and more figure flattering for a wide range of women.

Choose a style that is right for your body type. There are so many different styles of muumuu wrap dresses available that a woman of any body type can find a style that works for her. Browse through sleeveless, spaghetti strap, flutter sleeve, cap sleeve and long-sleeved options. If you're small, you may be overwhelmed by large prints; if you want to conceal your weight, you may consider darker fabrics.

Wrap it the right way. Most wrap dresses are kimono-style; there's a hole in the seam on the right side of the dress through which a sash is pulled from the left side and the two ends of the sash are tied together at the back. However, some wrap dresses are "faux wraps," meaning that the dress is sewn already "wrapped" and is put on over the head. If you are confused by the way a particular dress wraps, don't hesitate to ask the sales person or a fashion savvy friend. However, if you feel you will be confused by the dress every time you put it on, it may be a good idea to try a different style.

Dress it up or dress it down. The muumuu wrap dress is extremely versatile and can be worn both casually or formally. For a casual look, it can be paired with a simple pair of thong sandals or boots and a short jacket in colder weather. For a fancier look, chandelier earrings, layered necklaces and sandals with a heel may be added. You can also accessorize with hairstyles--simple ponytails or loose waves for casual activities or an updo for formal occasions.
