Things You'll Need

  • 10-inch wallboard knife
  • 6-inch wallboard knife
  • Joint Compound
  • Pan
  • Wallboard tape
  • Hand sander
  • Medium-grit sandpaper

Instructions

    • 1

      Apply a thin coat of drywall compound to the damaged area by smoothing dollops of joint compound with the 10-inch wallboard knife. Apply joint compound to the seams and press drywall tape onto the seams with the 6-inch wallboard knife. Allow the compound to dry overnight.

      Apply a second coat and allow it to dry. If the damage is severe, apply a third coat and allow it to dry.

      Smooth the dry compound by sanding it with the hand sander.

Tips & Warnings

  • Using quick-drying compound makes the repair much quicker.

  • Rent an electric sander to sand large areas.

  • Wear googles and a dust mask while sanding.
