How to Turn Off Return Receipts in Outlook for Hotmail Accounts
Using email clients like Microsoft Outlook is an easy, convenient alternative to accessing your email through a website. Client programs like Outlook offer many convenient features to use with your email service, like leaving a copy of your messages on the email servers, continuously checking for new messages, and providing various receipts with notifications when a recipient has received or read one of your email messages. Turning the receipt feature on and off is a simple procedure.

1
Navigate to your "Options" menu. This step may vary slightly depending on what version of Outlook you are using; open the "Tools" menu across the top of your Outlook window and choose "Options" towards the bottom. This will bring you to the account options menu.

2
Turn off mail receipts. There should be a tab in the "Options" menu labeled "Receipts." There are several different receipt options you can toggle on and off here. "Request a read receipt for all sent messages" at the top will notify you when someone reads an email you send to them. "Returning read receipts" notifies the sender of an email when you have read that email. There are typically three options listed here, "Always send a read receipt," "Notify me for each read receipt request" and "Never send a read receipt." To disable read receipts completely, choose "Never send a read receipt." The "Notify me..." option allows to you choose who will receive a read receipt from you and who will not, on a per-email basis. "Always send a read receipt" will send a receipt to every sender who requests one.

Click "Apply" on the bottom of the options menu to save your changes. In order to test if the changes took effect, you will need to use a different email address than the one you have configured in Outlook (you can sign up for a free Hotmail, Yahoo!, or Gmail account if you do not have another address). Email the address you have setup in Outlook and request a read receipt from the recipient. If your Outlook does not ask you if you want to send a read receipt, and if you do not receive a read receipt in your alternate account, you have successfully turned off this feature.
