How to Make a Superfudge Diorama

"Superfudge" by Judy Bloom explores the live of Peter and Fudge, two brothers who are uprooted from their life in New York City and forced to move with their parents to Princeton, New Jersey. After reading the book, you can use some of the events described in it to create a diorama for a class project or as a craft project for a lazy summer day. One diorama idea is to point out the differences between Peter and Fudge while also highlighting that they are a family

Instructions

    • 1

Choose two scenes from "Superfudge" to depict in the diorama, one centering on Fudge and the other on Peter. For example, you can choose the scene where Joanne and Peter connect Fudge pouring ice down his shirt to depict Peter, and Fudge hiding Tootsie in the closet during a game of Hide and Seek to depict Fudge.

    • 2

Take the lid off of the shoebox. Measure the length and width of one of the smaller sides of the box.

    • 3

Draw a rectangle on a piece of cardboard with the same measurements as the small side of the shoebox. For example, if the side measure 5 inches by 6 inches, the rectangle will measure the same. Cut out the rectangle from the cardboard.

    • 4

Apply a thin strip of glue to the top and bottom edge of the cardboard rectangle. Slide the rectangle into the center of the open shoebox so that it splits the space inside in half.

    • 5

Using the shoebox as a template, trace each of its sides onto colored construction paper. You should have five rectangles. Cut the rectangles out of the construction paper and glue them onto the outside of your shoebox.

    • 6

Draw pictures around the outside of the shoebox that depict Fudge and Peter in moments where they are the same such as the apprehension about moving or the birth of Tootsie. Color the pictures with markers.

    • 7

Model the characters from your scenes out of clay. Use different colored clays for their heads, hair and clothes.

    • 8

Create the scenery for each diorama section out of a mixture of clay, cardboard and construction paper. For example, the seats of the movie theater where Joanne and Peter connect can be made with clay and the movie screen with construction paper.

    • 9

Allow all your clay models to dry. Place glue on the bottom of the models and arrange them in the shoe box. Allow the glue to fully dry.

Tips & Warnings

  • Check with your teacher before making the diorama to make sure it follows the guidelines for any assignment you might have regarding the book.
