      Close all open files and programs.

      Click "Start" and then "My Computer." You will see a listing of all of your hard drives.

      Right-click on your primary hard drive (usually your C: drive) and then left-click "Properties."

      Select the "Tools" tab in the properties window and then click the "Check Now" button.

      Un-check "Automatically fix file system errors" and check "Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors."

      Choose to fix any hard drive errors after the scan has completed.

  • You may check "Automatically fix file system errors" after any bad sectors have been repaired.
