How to Scan & Repair Errors on a PC

Errors on your hard drive can cause your PC to slow down and sometimes crash. Hard drive errors can be the result of old equipment, viruses or damage from moving your PC around. Scanning and repairing hard drive errors is preventative maintenance for your PC and can save you time and money in the long run. You can scan and repair PC errors with just a few simple steps.

Instructions

1. Close all open files and programs.

2. Click "Start" and then "My Computer." You will see a listing of all of your hard drives.

3. Right-click on your primary hard drive (usually your C: drive) and then left-click "Properties."

4. Select the "Tools" tab in the properties window and then click the "Check Now" button.

5. Un-check "Automatically fix file system errors" and check "Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors."

6. Choose to fix any hard drive errors after the scan has completed.

Tips & Warnings

• You may check "Automatically fix file system errors" after any bad sectors have been repaired.
