How to Become a Good Plastic Surgeon
Plastic surgeons perform both elective and medically-required operations for their patients. Most surgeries focus on the face, breasts, genital areas and limbs, according to the American College of Surgeons. These surgeons must develop extraordinary skill in tissue transplantation and structure replantation. Some plastic surgeons specialize in areas like the hands, head and neck. Good plastic surgeons possess certain traits and characteristics which make them especially well-suited and in demand.

1
Become board certified. This is done through the American Board of Plastic Surgery (ABPS) within the American Board of Medical Specialties. This ensures you have met certain educational and professional standards and demonstrates proof of competency to prospective patients.
-
2
Participate only in honest and ethical advertising practices. Marketing should not lead patients to expect unrealistic results, and they should understand the possible risks before proceeding, according to the ABPS.
-
-
3
Specialize in a certain body area or type of plastic surgery to increase your knowledge and experience. Thus, you will provide more targeted, superior service as opposed to a generalist practitioner. Special certification exists for plastic surgeons specializing in hand surgery and head and neck surgery.
-
4
Stay up-to-date on new procedures as they develop. Offer only procedures in which you are fully qualified and trained. Such training generally meets licensing or certification requirements for continuing education.
-
5
Improve your communication skills with patients. People feel more comfortable with a doctor they trust, relate to and connect with on a personal level. Take the time to put new patients at ease, inviting their questions regarding procedures and potential risks. Show empathy and understanding as necessary. Do not wait until the day of their surgery to do this. If you are always personable and affable, patients will feel that you and your staff provide excellent care.

Tips & Warnings
Never advertise for patients who would not otherwise seek your help or choose to have plastic surgery performed. This is not only unethical but against the policies of the ABPS and may result in disciplinary action against you.
