How to Stop an Update on Internet Explorer 7

Microsoft enabled Internet Explorer 7 to be automatically updated. That process will install the updated Internet Explorer 8 browser to your computer. However, if you would like to keep using Internet Explorer 7 and don't want to update to Internet Explorer 8, Microsoft has also created a toolkit which will block the IE 8 updates. By simply downloading this toolkit, the Internet Explorer 8 automatic update will be disabled on your computer.

Instructions

    • 1

Go to the Microsoft website and click "Download" to download Microsoft's Internet Explorer 8 Blocker Toolkit.

    • 2

Click "Run" when asked whether you want to run or save the file. Read the License Terms, then click "Yes" to accept the agreement.

    • 3

Click "Browse..." to choose a location to extract the files, or leave the default location Microsoft has chosen, then click "OK." Restart your computer for the changes to take affect.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you change your mind and decide to upgrade to Internet Explorer 8, you can do so by going to the Microsoft website and downloading it. The toolkit will not block you from downloading the update yourself.
