Remove the current version of DirectX before you install the recommended version.

DirectX is a program that game developers use to ensure games run across platforms. With DirectX technology, computers don't need to be identical to run the same game. Each game is different and may run from a different version of the software. After all, DirectX has changed drastically since its development in 1996.

DirectX versions differ in their capability to allow certain completion of tasks within a game. Each game has its own recommended version of DirectX and other versions may not be compatible. Sadly, DirectX doesn't come with its own uninstaller program and must be erased from the registry manually.

Instructions

    • 1

Go to "Start" and click on the "Run" command. A small dialog box will appear for typing Windows commands.

    • 2

Type in "regedit" to open the Windows Registry Editor.

    • 3

Navigate through the registry entries to "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\DirectX."

    • 4

Right-click the DirectX entry and click "Delete."

    • 5

Restart your machine. DirectX 8.1, the default version of DirectX as of 2010, will reinstall upon startup.

    • 6

Open a new "Run" box and type in "dxdiag" to confirm that the DirectX version you had was deleted and that the reinstalled 8.1 version is the active version on the machine.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use the recommended version of DirectX for the game you are playing.

  • Do not update DirectX unless recommended by your game developer.
