How to Retrieve a Google Maps API Key

The Google Maps API is open to anyone.

Google Maps is a robust online mapping service provided by Google featuring satellite imagery, street view navigation and an easy-to-use interface. Google Maps is also open to development by third-parties, thanks to an open application programming interface (API). Utilizing the API, numerous Google Maps mash-ups have been created to display a variety of data on a map. The Google Maps API is accessible to anyone with a free API key from Google.

Instructions

1. Launch a web browser.

2. Navigate to the Google Maps API sign-up page (see Resources).

3. Agree to the service terms and enter your website address.

4. Click "Generate API Key." Be sure to save the generated web page or record your API key information in a Word document for future reference.
