How to Potty Train a Black Lab

Black Lab puppies love the outdoors.

The easiest way to potty train a highly intelligent breed like a black Labrador retriever is to prevent mistakes from happening. If you never allow your puppy to have an accident in the house it will always associate going potty with going outside. This requires keeping a very careful watch on your puppy at all times.

Instructions

    • 1

Obtain a crate that is of suitable size for your puppy. A wire crate can be purchased in a size suitable for an adult black Lab. Use a divider panel to partition the crate to a suitable size. The puppy should be able to lie down, turn around and stand up without obstruction.

    • 2

Put your puppy on a feeding schedule. Feed your puppy at the same time, twice a day, every day. Putting your puppy on a schedule will regulate his digestive system so that you can better predict when your black Labrador will have to go outside.

    • 3

Keep your puppy's water bowl after 6 p.m. This prevents nighttime accidents.

    • 4

Keep your puppy in your sight at all times. Crate it when you cannot keep an eye on it or when you're not home.

    • 5

Watch for signs such as circling, yelping, crying or sniffing. Immediately say "outside" and pick the puppy up. Take it outside and place it in the grass. Allow the puppy to take the time it needs to complete its business. Praise the puppy after it's finished. Let it play for a little bit after it relieves itself. This prevents the puppy from learning to "hold it" because it learns that going potty means it will immediately go inside.

Give the puppy a treat once you're back in the house. Continue to either watch the puppy closely or crate it.
