How to Raise Zebra Finches

How to Raise Zebra Finches thumbnail
One of the joys of owning a zebra finch is admiring its beautiful colors.

The zebra finch, otherwise known as Taeniopygia guttata, is a popular household pet despite its reluctance to be handled. This native of Central Australia is known for its beautiful colors, its one forward- and three backward-facing toes and its distinctive calls, consisting of a two-note song. The zebra finch male displays a bright red beak and bright feathers, while the orange-beaked females have a less colorful plummage. Easy to care for and full of personality, the zebra finch may grow up to 8 inches in length including tail, live between five and 17 years in captivity and is capable of mating year round.

Instructions

    • 1

Go to a reputable pet store and select an energetic finch with a tight grouping of feathers. These are signs of good health. Purchase at least two birds; finches live in large groups in the wild and enjoy socializing with each other.

    • 2

Position the cage in a warm and well-lit area close to household activity. Place your cage chest high and avoid drafts, direct sunlight or close proximity to the kitchen.

    • 3

Spread newspaper or a brown paper bag on the bottom of the cage to catch bird droppings. Then place your pets' accessories inside the cage, making sure to keep food and water bowls well-stocked and nesting materials accessible inside the cage.

    • 4

Turn a night light on before turning off the main lights when going to bed, allowing any skittish birds to settle in under the simulated moonlight the nightlight provides.

Tips & Warnings

  • Happily paired finches will groom and preen the feathers of their mate. However, though rare, pecking and the chasing of one another may indicate a less than peaceful pairing and at least one of the birds may need to be replaced. Although finches keep nails trim by moving on their perch, it may occasionally be necessary to trim their nails. Do so with caution and only if needed.
