How to Edge Plexiglass

Plexiglass is a clear, man-made plastic polymer that is used as a glass replacement. The material is durable and resistant to cracking, although the surface can become scratched. Cutting Plexiglass is similar to cutting other building materials such as wood. However, after cutting is complete, the edges of the Plexiglass are extremely sharp and can cut the skin if touched. For this reason, you must edge the Plexiglass after cutting it to remove the sharp edges. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Put on a pair of gloves and lay the Plexiglass on a worktable with the sharp edge facing you. If there is more than one sharp edge, pick an edge to start with.

    • 2

Place a piece of 200-grit sandpaper onto a sanding block using the instructions provided with the block. Typically, the sandpaper is held in place by metal-spring loaded bars at each end of the block, or wrapped around the ends and pushed into metal tacks.

    • 3

Wet the surface of the sandpaper with water until it is shiny and there are no dry spots.

    • 4

Hold the sandpaper block in the palm of your hand and place the sandpaper flat against the sharp edge of the Plexiglass.

    • 5

Move your hand back and forth along the edge of the Plexiglass to smooth the rough edge. To determine when you have sanded enough, rub your gloved hand along the edge of the Plexiglass. If your glove moves smoothly without catching, the edge has been sanded enough.

    • 6

Insert a new piece of sandpaper onto the sanding block and wet the sandpaper with water. Sand each of the remaining edges using the same technique you used with the first edge.
