How to Pick a Golf Shaft for Your Swing
Golf shafts are among the most important technologies in the sport for both low and high handicappers. With higher flex, standard and stiff shafts available, it it essential to select the correct type of shaft for your swing. Different shafts suit different players, depending on each individual's swing speed, skill level, strength and age. You can find the right shaft for your golf club by first determining your swing speed then following a few simple guidelines.

1
Determine your swing capabilities and speed. At the golf course, watch other players of your age group. Compare your swing to theirs, noting speed.
-
2
Select a senior shaft if you are an older golfer with a slow to average swing speed for your age. You can also select this shaft if you are a female golfer with a slower swing.

3
Select a ladies shaft if you are a woman with an average swing speed and average physical capabilities. These are generally fitted for older ladies and adult or teenage women with average swing speeds, usually with handicaps ranging from 15 to 25.
-
4
Select a regular flex shaft if you are a male with a slow swing speed or an older male with a faster swing speed than most your age.
-
5
Select a stiff shaft if you are a physically fit female golfer with one of the fastest swing speeds on your course. These shafts are typically appropriate for women with very low handicaps, near the professional level. Most average men golfers in their late teens, 20s or 30s use stiff shafts. A stiff shaft is appropriate for athletic males with quick swings.

6
Use extra shift staffs if you are nearly a scratch golfer and an athletic male with a swing speed approaching that of professional golfers.
