How to Seal Stone Veneer

Weather changes can damage stone veneers.

Stone veneer is used to dress up a building while avoiding the weight and cost of using full stones in construction. The veneers are thin slabs of stone that have a surface that resembles a full stone structure. The stone is easy to care for without any extra treatment during general use. If you plan to place your veneers near water or where they will be exposed to a lot of moisture you can apply a sealer to protect them. It is easy to do, just make sure you get the correct sealer.

Things You'll Need

• Penetrating, breathable sealer
• Paintbrush

Instructions

1. Let the stone veneers cure for 30 days after installation before sealing them.

2. Apply a very thin coat of penetrating, breathable sealer over the surface of the veneers with a paintbrush.

3. Let the sealer dry according to the manufacturer's directions. You need to follow the direction precisely to avoid damaging your veneers.

4. Add another fine coat to the veneers and let it dry. Do not apply more sealer than this unless your product specifically says to do so.

Tips & Warnings

• If you are going to seal the veneers you should do it as soon after it cures as possible to avoid the stone getting dirty in the meantime.

• Test the sealer on an inconspicuous part of the veneer; sealers can affect the color of your stone in an undesirable way.
