How to Search for Properties by MLS Number

How to Search for Properties by MLS Number thumbnail
Homes for sale usually have an MLS number.

A Multiple Listing Service, or MLS, number is a seven-digit identification number used by real estate services to uniquely identify a property that is on the market. If you know the MLS number of a home or other property, it's easy to find the real estate listing.

Instructions

    • 1

Start with the Internet. Enter the MLS number into a search engine, and the chances are good that the listing will show up at the very top of your search results.

    • 2

Vary your search. MLS numbers sometimes appear as a seven-digit number (e.g., 7654321) and sometimes with a state code in front (e.g., NY7654321). Try searching both ways if your initial search doesn't produce the desired listing.

Use real estate sites. You can search by MLS number at several online real estate listing services, including homes.com and realtor.com. Try your search directly at either or both of these sites.
