With the advancements in computer memory, USB flash drives have come to rival conventional hard disk drive in terms of storage space and portability. With the increase in storage capacity, personal computer files have also increased in size to a point where they cannot be stored on a storage device such as a flash drive without the NTFS file system. Converting your flash drive's file system from FAT16 and FAT32 to NTFS will allow you to store files with more than 4GB of space.

  1. Converting A USB Flash Drive to NTFS Without Preserving The Data

    • 1

      Insert the USB Flash Drive into the PC's USB port and go to "My Computer."

      Right-click the USB Flash Drive Disk Icon and choose "Format."

      Click NTFS in the file system list and click start. Wait for the USB Flash Drive to be formatted then click "Close" and copy the 4GB file to the USB flash drive.

    Converting A USB Flash Drive to NTFS Using Partition Magic 8.0 To Preserve Data

      Start Partition Magic 8.0 and right-click the USB flash drive from the list presented.

      Choose "Convert Partition" from the drop down menu. In the dialog box which appears set the storage memory slider to maximum and choose the NTFS file system and click "Finish." Left-Click the option "Accept changes and run" in the left window pane.

      Exit Partition Magic 8.0 and copy the 4GB file to the USB Flash Drive.

    Converting A USB Flash Drive to NTFS Using MS-DOS To Preserve Data

      Start Microsoft Windows and click "Start" and then "Run." In the command prompt type "cmd" and click "OK."

      Type "convert driveletter: /FS:NTFS" in the MS-DOS dialog box. In place of a drive letter, insert the drive letter used to identify the USB Flash Drive.

      Exit MS-DOS and copy the 4GB file to the USB Flash Drive.
