How to Speed Up Your DSL Connection

How to Speed Up Your DSL Connection thumbnail
Voice and data signals interfere with each other when transmitted over the same phone line.

A DSL--digitbal subscriber line--Internet connection is at least five times faster than traditional dial-up Internet, but even that isn't fast enough for users uploading and downloading lots of data. Your maximum connection speed is determined by the Internet service you buy from your provider, but most of the time home users aren't getting as much speed out of their DSL connection as their subscription allows. Get the most out of your connection by keeping your phone's voice signals and DSL modem's digital signal from sharing phone lines. There are two main pieces of hardware that do this: a POTS-plain old telephone service-splitter and DSL microfilter dongles.

Things You'll Need

  • DSL modem
  • DSL microfilter dongles
  • Wired or wireless router (optional)

Instructions

    • 1

Call your phone company or Internet service provider and ask them to install a POTS-splitter at your address. A POTS-splitter costs less than $70; installation prices vary by location and company.

    • 2

Set up your DSL modem as close to the POTS-splitter as possible. Be sure to connect the modem's phone cable to the POTS-splitter phone jack marked "Digital" or "Modem" and not into the "Phone" jack.

    • 3

Set up your router as close to the DSL modem as possible. Use a wireless router if you have one; POTS-splitters are usually installed in garages or other inconvenient locations.

    • 4

Plug a DSL microfilter into any phone jack with a phone connected to it, then plug the phones' cables into the microfilter.

Tips & Warnings

  • With wired routers, the location of the POTS-splitter may make for inconvenient modem and router placement; you can skip step three if you prefer. But remember: the more cabling your Internet signal goes through, the slower it gets.
