DIY: How to Make a Child-Sized Picnic Table

DIY: How to Make a Child-Sized Picnic Table thumbnail
Many picnic tables are made with treated pine.

A child-sized picnic table is similar to a full sized-adult picnic table. The only differences is that they are smaller, and require less wood and hardware. Picnic tables must be built out of a material able to withstand exposure to rain and constant sunlight. This means that the wood has to have these abilities naturally, or be treated to have them. Green-treated pine construction lumber has these qualities, and is less expensive than the other woods like cedar.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut the ends of your 25-inch boards at a 22-degree angle, using a protractor and circular saw. The 25-inch length of the board should not be affected, and when the board is laying flat it should look like a parallelogram. These are the legs to the picnic table, and they will rest on there ends as they lean at a 22-degree angle toward the center of the table.

    • 2

Lay two legs flat on your work space so they are leaning toward each other at a 22-degree angle. The ends should be horizontal, and the top outside corners of these boards should be 24 inches apart. Use four screws to screw a 24-inch board to the two legs so the top edge is flush with the top ends of the two legs. Screw a 40-inch board to the legs so it is parallel with the 24-inch board, but 12 inches below it. The centers of these boards should line up. This is one end of the picnic table. Repeat these steps to complete the opposite end. The 24-inch boards will support the tabletop boards, and the 40-inch boards will support the benches to the picnic table.

    • 3

Position the ends of the picnic so the legs are between the two 24-inch boards. The 24-inch boards should be parallel, and 36 inches apart. Screw six 48-inch boards to the 24-inch boards so the distance from the ends of these boards to the 24-inch boards are equal at both ends of the table. The outside edges of the two outside 48-inch boards should be flush with the ends of the 24-inch boards. Screw three 48-inch boards to each pair of 40-inch boards in the same manner. These are your bench boards. You should have three bench boards for each side of the table.
