The Internet first gained mainstream popularity in the early 1990s. At this time, the only way to connect to the Web was with a dial-up connection through a standard phone line. This type of connection is outdated by today's standards. Computer manufacturers no longer make computers with built-in phone jacks but are still able to connect to dial-up Internet with the help of a USB dial-up adapter.
