How to Paint a Metal Awning for a Window
Metal awnings shade windows from excessive sunlight and heat. Over time and as they are exposed to the climate, awnings can develop rust or peeling paint. Things You'll Need
- Pressure washer
- Fine-grit sandpaper
- Painter's tape
- Newspaper
- Oil-based primer
- Foam roller or paint sprayer
- Oil-based exterior paint

Remove dirt, debris and old peeling paint from the metal awning, using a pressure washer. A garden hose with a spray nozzle may also be effective at cleaning the dirt.

Sand the metal awning lightly with fine-grit sandpaper. Sand down bubbled or cracked paint. If the finish on the metal awning is glossy, sand the entire surface lightly to prepare the awning for paint. After sanding, clean the entire surface with the pressure washer.

Tape the window and any other areas surrounding the awning with painter's tape and newspaper.

Apply oil-based painting primer to the awning, using a foam roller or paint sprayer to apply a light coat. Allow the primer to dry.

Apply-oil based exterior paint to the awning, using the foam roller or paint sprayer. Allow the paint to dry and add more coats of paint as necessary.
