How to Groom a Yorkie Poo

How to Groom a Yorkie Poo thumbnail
Yorkie poos don't shed extensively.

A Yorkie poo is a cross breed of a toy poodle and a Yorkshire terrier. These hybrid, or designer, dogs are popular due to their non-shedding coat. Yorkie poos are not recognized by the American Kennel Club and have no breed standard. Their coats, colors, ears, tails and temperament vary depending on whether they get more poodle or Yorkie characteristics. To keep things simple, many Yorkie poo owners have their dogs groomed in a universal or puppy cut.

Instructions

  1. Bathing

    • 1

Place the Yorkie poo in a bathtub or sink. Brush and comb out any mats before getting the dog wet. Mats will tighten when placed in water. Use a cotton ball in each ear to keep any water out while you are bathing it.

    • 2

Wet the dog thoroughly using either a pitcher or a hand-held shower head. Pour shampoo into your hands and rub into the dog's coat. Do not get shampoo in the dog's ears or eyes. Use a flea comb to remove any buildup of eye discharge while the coat is wet. Rinse the dog with water. Cover the dogs ears while rinsing to avoid getting water in dog's ears.

    • 3

Squeeze out any excess water before gently towel drying the Yorkie poo. Remove the dog from the bathtub and away from the water. Use a blow dryer on the cool setting to dry the dog.

    Grooming

    • 4

Use a clipper to remove the hair that grows in between the dog's pads on its feet. A typical blade used for this job is a number 40 blade. Use scissors to gently remove the longer hair that overlaps the pads. Use a number 10 blade to clean out the dog's genital areas.

    • 5

Brush the Yorkie poo's coat with both a slicker brush and a metal comb. Pay special attention to the dog's legs, feet and tail as those areas are often overlooked. If you encounter a mat that you can't get out, place the metal comb between the dogs skin and the mat and carefully cut the mat out.

    • 6

Use a clipper to cut the dog's coat to the desired length. Clipper combs are as long as 1 inch, but 1/2 inch is the easiest length to maintain. Round off the feet with scissors and trim off any hair you missed with the clippers. Flag tail and trim to desired length.

    • 7

Trim face and ears while holding the dog by her chin hair. The facial hair is usually the same length as the body or a little longer. Trim ears about a 1/4 inch away from the ear leather.

    • 8

Cut the Yorkie poo's nails with a nail clipper. Avoid hitting the quick, which will bleed. If your dog has white nails, you can see the quick. If it has black nails, take a little bit off at a time. If the nail does bleed, use corn starch to stop the bleeding.

Tips & Warnings

  • A Yorkie poo should be professionally groomed if possible.

  • Use gentle and soothing remarks while grooming your Yorkie poo.

  • Use a grooming table with a grooming arm to keep your Yorkie poo from injuring itself or you. If you don't have a grooming table, ask someone else to help you with the grooming.
