A special icon for Microsoft Internet Explorer can be added to the computer desktop only in versions of Windows previous to Windows 7. The Internet Explorer registry file can be modified to add the special icon. This option was left out of Windows 7. As an alternative, a standard Internet Explorer shortcut icon can be added to the desktop in Windows 7.

Instructions

      Click the "Start" button. Click "All Programs."

      Locate the "Internet Explorer" icon. Right-click the icon and drag it to the desktop.

      Select "Create Shortcuts Here."

    Earlier Windows Versions

      Click the "Start" button. Select "Run."

      Type "notepad" in the "Open" box. Press "Enter."

      Enter this text into Notepad: Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

      [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\HideDesktopIcons\NewStartPanel]

      Click "File" and select "Save As." Enter "Ie.reg" in the file name field.

      Click "Desktop" in the file location column. Click "Save." The Internet Explorer icon should now appear on the desktop.
