How to Convert a CSV File to a Text File

Spreadsheets can create comma-separated value (CSV) files to allow transfer of information among number and database programs. Unfortunately, other programs, such as word processing software, cannot read this format, making the use of such information impossible in written materials. An easy solution is to convert CSV to a text file, which almost any document software can handle.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose the "File" menu of any spreadsheet program, such as Excel or OpenOffice Calc. Select "Open" to open the CSV file you want to convert. Choose "File" again and select "Save As" to display the "Save As" dialog box. Select "Text" in the "Save As Type" drop-down and enter a new file name, if needed. Click the "OK" or "Save" button to save the file as a text file.

Visit the website of a free online converter, such as Comet Docs (see References for link). Click "Browse" to load the CSV file you want to convert. Choose "CSV to Delimited" or "TXT" in the type options. Accept the other defaults and enter your email address. Click "Send" to convert the file to text. The converted file is sent to your email address.

Buy, install and run a commercial program like Advanced CSV Converter, which allows conversions without connecting to the Internet. You can download a free trial from the website (see References for link). Click "Browse" in "Source File" to load the CSV file you want to convert. Then click "Browse" in "Output File" to display the "Save As" dialog box. Choose "Text Files" in the "Save As Type" drop-down and enter a new file name as needed. Click "Save" to save the file as text.
