How to Install Pictures From a Memory Stick Onto a Computer

If you had to use floppy disks to store the same amount of pictures the smallest memory flash drive can hold, you'd have to lug 44 disks with you. While you may not be able to imagine filling 44 disks' worth of photos, the ease of a memory stick (also called a flash drive, USB drive or thumb drive) makes transferring your pictures quick and simple. The memory stick works seamlessly with your computer.

Instructions

    • 1

Right-click your computer's Windows "Start" button or symbol and click "Explore." Navigate to the place you'd like to store your photos, such as clicking "My Documents" under the "Desktop" icon and then clicking "My Pictures." Another option is to simply click the "Desktop."

    • 2

Click the location to store the pictures so the right side of the screen adjusts. If you already have other folders of pictures, programs or documents in this same location, named folders and icons will appear on the right side of the screen. If the location has nothing in it yet, the right side of the screen will be empty.

    • 3

Right-click the white space on the right side of the screen and select "New." Choose "Folder." A new folder appears; type a name for the folder, such as "New Baby Pictures 2010." Press the "Enter" key and the folder is set up.

    • 4

Double-click the new folder. The right side of the screen will be empty. The top title bar of the window will have your folder's name. Leave this window open.

    • 5

Insert your memory stick into your PC USB port. This port is a very small, thin rectangle and may be located on the front or back of your computer.

    • 6

Right-click the "Start" button and select "Explore" again. This opens a second explorer window. Position and resize the two windows so you can see them both.

    • 7

Scroll to find your memory stick on the explorer window navigation tree. It may say "USB Drive," "USB Disk," "Memory Stick" or have a specific brand name or a name you programmed. Click once on the memory stick so the right side of the window opens to show what it holds.

    • 8

Press and hold the "Shift" key, then click once on each item on the memory stick to copy. These may be individual picture names or, if you have pictures grouped into folders, entire folders. When everything is highlighted, right-click the highlighted items and select "Copy."

    • 9

Click back to the other window of the new folder you created ("New Baby 2010"). Right-click the white space of the right side of the screen and select "Paste." Depending on how much you copied, it may take a few moments as your images copy to the folder. If you copied pictures, a list of them will appear on the screen. If you copied folders, folder icons and their names will appear on the screen.

    • 10

Delete the pictures from the memory stick to free up room if you choose. Close both windows and remove the memory stick from the computer.

Tips & Warnings

  • Be gentle when inserting your memory stick for the first time. Similar to trying to fit a square peg in a round hole, make sure you have the correct slot before trying to insert the device or you could cause serious damage to your PC or the memory stick. Try lining up the device with the slot and slowly sliding it in. Keep in mind that you may already be using your USB ports; chargers for media players and things like USB-powered lava lamps may be taking up the slots.
