RAM is also known as random access memory.

All computers contain RAM, which is accessed by different programs on the computer to store and retrieve data and to process programs, all in real time. The more RAM that a computer has, the faster it is able to process program information. More RAM also means more programs and files can be open at once. Like many laptops, the Apple MacBook has removable RAM that can be upgraded.

    • 1

Turn off the computer. Unplug the charger cord and any peripheral connections such as Ethernet or external drives.

    • 2

Close the laptop and place it face down on a flat surface. Locate the battery release latch, which has a small slit in it. Insert the quarter or the edge of a small coin into the slit and turn it until the battery pops up on one corner. Lift the battery out of the compartment.

    • 3

Locate the three small screws along the inner edge of the battery compartment. Use the screw driver to loosen them; you do not need to completely remove them.

    • 4

Gently pry out the L-bracket that runs along the top edge and the left side of the battery compartment to expose the RAM compartment.

    • 5

Locate the two small white levers in the top section of the battery compartment. Pull each one toward you. The RAM modules will partially slide out from their compartments. Gently grasp the edge of each module and pull it straight out into the battery compartment.

Tips & Warnings

  • While you don't have to remove the battery on the aluminum MacBooks to remove the RAM, it is recommended to ensure no power going to the components.

  • If your MacBook has 2 RAM slots, you should fill both with equal sized modules. For example, a MacBook with a maximum possible memory capacity of 8GB and two slots should utilize two 4GB modules.

  • Touch your hands to a metal object before touching the inside components or the RAM.

  • Always check your MacBbook's manual to determine the maximum amount of RAM it can handle. Depending on model and year of production, this amount can vary.
