How to Get Wireless Internet on a DSL Modem
A DSL Internet connection makes browsing the Internet and downloading movies and music faster, but most modems require use of an Ethernet cable to connect to the Internet. Connecting to the Internet wirelessly through a DSL modem eliminates the need for an Ethernet cable, letting you surf the web from anywhere the computer can access the wireless network. Very few DSL modems have wireless capability built in; you'll likely need to purchase and set up a wireless router to get wireless Internet.
Instructions
-
-
1
Unplug the DSL modem's power cable. Unplug the Ethernet cable from the router or computer.
-
2
Plug the wireless router's power adapter into a wall outlet, then plug the small, circular power jack from the adapter into the back of the wireless router.
-
-
3
Plug the Ethernet cable connected to the DSL modem into the Ethernet port on the wireless router labeled "WAN" or "Internet." The wireless router has only one of these options.
-
4
Plug in the DSL modem's power cable.
-
5
Move the mouse pointer to the bottom of the screen to bring up the Windows task bar. Click on the wireless signal strength panel on the right side of the task bar.
-
6
Click on the wireless network created by the wireless router. By default, most wireless routers name their networks after their manufacturer. For instance, a D-link wireless router creates a wireless network named "dlink," while a Linksys router creates a network named "linksys." You now have wireless Internet through the DSL modem.

Tips & Warnings
The computer needs a wireless adapter to connect to a wireless Internet signal. Most laptops as of 2010 come with wireless adapters pre-installed, but you may need to purchase a wireless Ethernet card for any desktop computers you have.
