How to Troubleshoot a Pool Sweep That is Not Moving

How to Troubleshoot a Pool Sweep That is Not Moving thumbnail
A sweep should clear debris from the bottom of the pool.

A pool sweep cleans and maintains the bottom and sometimes sides of your swimming pool. These sweeps often run automatically and require little attention from the pool owner. Water runs from the pool's plumbing through the sweep's hose, which propels the sweep. Due to the continuous nature with which sweeps are run, problems are bound to arise. Common troubleshooting techniques include checking the sweep's hose and leaf bag for clogs, and resetting the hose's memory to prevent bends or folds. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the pool sweep hose from the pool's jets and skimmer. Rinse away gunk and other buildup around the hose entrance with a water hose. Push a hose with running water deep into the hose and rinse out debris that may be clogged.

    • 2

Unfasten all leaf bags and nets attached to the sweep. Spray the bags or nets with a water hose and remove any debris caught inside the bag.

    • 3

Disconnect the sweeps hose. Lay the hose's full length out on the ground in sunlight. Sunlight removes the "memory" contained in the hose and allows it to be flexible and not bunch up or bend while in the pool water. Leave the hose out in sunlight for at least two hours.

Tips & Warnings

  • If the sweep appears to be in proper condition but still will not work, examine the amount of suction, or lack thereof, in the sweep. No suction may point out problems with other pool equipment like the pump or motor.
