How to Become a Corporate Recruiter

Corporate recruiters are a valuable asset to their companies. They have special skills in seeking the best candidates for the job, screening resumes, interviewing candidates and knowledge of hiring laws. Filling positions with the right people reduces company turnover and saves on retraining costs. Entering the corporate recruiting field can be done through a combination of education, experience in human resources roles and joining professional associations and networking organizations.

      Complete a college degree in Human Resources. This education will give you the background to handle recruiting tasks and is often required by companies hiring a corporate recruiter. Your school may also assist you in obtaining an internship in a HR department.

      Join associations such as the International Association for Corporate & Professional Recruitment or The Association of Executive Search Consultants. Association membership offers benefits such as job listings, continuing training, conferences and meetings.

      Complete certification as a Professional in Human Resources (PHR®) and Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR®). These certifications are respected and give you an edge in job seeking as a corporate recruiter. The PHR® and SPHR® certifications can be obtained through the HR Certification Institute after passing an examination.

      Join professional job networking websites such as LinkedIn. These sites allow for professional networking with peers and contain many groups of recruiting peers with strong membership. These groups often contain a forum with postings about the recruiting industry, trends and overall discussion about the job.

      Obtain an entry level position in a corporate human resources department. You may start as a Human Resources Assistant or HR Generalist. In these roles you may assist the senior corporate recruiters with placing job postings, reviewing resumes, setting up interviews and completing telephone screenings with candidates.
