As you surf the Internet, your browser may require the use of small add-on programs called ActiveX controls. These add-on programs can make your browsing more enjoyable or they can enable the installation of updates you may require for security purposes. As you browse the Internet with Internet Explorer (IE), you may see a message telling you that you must install an ActiveX control to proceed with whatever process you desire to complete. Enable ActiveX in IE8 quickly by utilizing the "Tools" function of the browser.

Instructions

    • 1

Select the “Tools” tab in the upper right corner of the IE browser and then select “Internet Options” from the drop-down menu.

    • 2

Click the “Security” tab and then select the “Custom Level” button.

    • 3

Click the arrow button to advance down the list until you find “Run ActiveX controls and plug-ins.” Select “Administrator Approved” by placing a check mark in the circle.

    • 4

Change additional ActiveX options to “Enable” or “Prompt” as you desire. If you use “Enable,” the controls will install without notification. If you use “Prompt,” you will receive a notification and you can then decide whether to allow the installation or prevent it.

    • 5

Select “OK” to finish enabling ActiveX controls.
