Becoming an NBA sports agent requires some educational preparation. Also, having a network of professionals in the field to help mentor you along and teach you the ropes could be an invaluable resource. The main responsibility of an NBA agent is to represent his clients, or players, in the contract negotiation process. The NBA sports agent is out to get the best possible deal for his client which, in turn, will make him the highest commission.

      Complete your college education. NBA agents should have some level of formal training in the business or marketing world. There are even NBA agents who have obtained law degrees. Getting a college education will help you in the process of negotiating contracts. Contract negotiating is one of the biggest responsibilities of an agent, dealing with finance and marketing. Formal education will provide the necessary preparation.

      Register as an National Basketball Players Association (NBPA) Player Agent. Registering with the NBPA requires payment of an annual fee no later than July 1st, and attendance at a mandatory annual agents seminar. However, very experienced agents may receive permission to forego attending.

      Sign a player to a representation agreement. Signing an NBA-worthy player to an agreement is necessary to earn money. As an agent, you will earn a maximum commission of four percent on the salaries of your players. On a player earning the NBA minimum, the agent stands to earn $2,000 for the season.

Tips & Warnings

  • You must forward every completed contract to the NBPA within 48 hours of execution.

  • Be aware of NCAA rules. An agent breaking these rules will not be able to secure any clients due to a damaged reputation.
